Have you clicked yet? What does mwillett.org: Debate Unlimited offer the visitor? The site covers a huge range of subjects loosely grouped into various headings. It is in some senses several distinct sites rolled up in one. Atheism. There are a huge collection of atheist inspired pages, far more than most specialized atheist sites have to offer. Most are written by myself but there is a growing number of guest articles on atheist, rationalist and non-religious themes. While many are directly questioning Christianity Yahweh is only one of thousands of gods I don't believe in, and not even the least incredible. Morality, evolution, wonder and the meaning of life are all covered. Politics. As there isn't a god to sort out our problems we have to do something about it ourselves, the way I see it politics cannot be optional. We can either bleat on about the woes of the world or attempt to do something about it, which often starts in the same way, identifying the problems and working out which strategies are the least harmful. Mind.I am not a single issue obsessive, quite the contrary, things that don't fit particularly neatly in other categories go in here, the Mind section. There are very few limits to the direction my mind can wander. Memes.Memes is all about understanding ideas in an evolutionary context. Ideas get replicated because they have attributes that make them suitable to be replicated: since when were truisms deemed to be automatically false? Memetics studies the transmission of ideas by studying what makes an idea inherently suitable for replication. It is an insight which transforms thinking in many subjects. It obviously has implications to religions, philosophies, politics and many other kinds of thought. It is a new discipline, if that is not too farcical a label for it, and many people are trying to take it where it should not go, I am simultaneously trying to expand the subject and hold back some of the hotheads who are a little intoxicated by the heady power of memetics as an explanatory tool. Matters and Feedback take some of the subjects raised and take them a little further, sometimes they go way too far. Forum. The forum is a very important part of the site, allowing visitors to interact with me and other regular visitors, fans of the site and a few people who love to debate. The forum tries to maintain a fine balnce between quality of debate and friendly atmosphere, as I get a few complaints in each direction I think I must be broadly on the right lines. I am English, but I am a strong believer in internationalism and a one world community. Eventually, not by revolution but by evolution, I want to see a single world state leading to peace and greater harmony, although not a utopia, an end to history or a fairytale happily ever after. This is reflected in the site. Many English and British people like it because it is internationalist and outward looking, many people of other nationalities enjoy the Englishness of the site and the forum. That is fine by me, I am English and that is an end to it, pride or shame seem out of place. Saying your are proud of what you are is by its nature offensive to other people, if you are proud to be from the US of A you are in effect saying thank fuck I'm not Belgian. I am quite happy to call a spade a spade, I find political correctness deeply offensive. I am not a racist yet I don't see how pretending that there are no differences between peoples is going to make the racists go away, cover up is never an answer. They probably will not go away even when the truth is out there for all to see. By trying to silence them the pc lobby is just strengthening them, fighting racism with lies of perfect equality is like fighting a hot oil fire with water. |
