In April 2005 I removed a lot of nude images from my website. Why? Was the site censored? In a way, yes, it was. The site was beginning to be blocked by some servers, some colleges and some national governments. That was a cause for concern. It was also upsetting my wife to see me spending so long messing about with photographs of naked women. She did not make me remove the pictures, but she did want me to do it. Another major factor in my decision was the sheer weight of bytes that was being used to send pictures of naked women to people who had no interest in anything I was writing. The tail was starting to wag the dog. So I weighed up all the pros and cons and decided it was an excellent time to make the move and wean the site off the drug of nudity-seeking visitors. April would not have been a record month for site traffic in any event. It was the ideal time to act. The site could get back to doing what it does best: text, ideas, expanding and blowing minds. What is the point in getting one-handed surfers from Uzbekistan, Tuvalu and Christmas Island if they never contribute to the debate? I've got a funny feeling there are some other sites out there that feature nude images of women, if that's what you want to see. If you've navigated your way here just to gawp at photographs of naked women you can just navigate off again. There aren't any. But there is a lot of material on this site, hundreds of pages, feel free to explore now you're here. Comments |
