Extinction is a natural process. In excess of 99% of all species are extinct. We have to get the impact of our activities in context. What we are doing to the Earth is nothing compared to what happened at the end of the Cretaceous era or at the end of the Permian era. But that is the end of the good news. We are killing species at a huge rate, this kind of damage will have profound changes on the whole ecosystem that is the Earth. I don't believe in any mystical Earth-force or mother nature, I am no tree-hugger, but we must get to grips with what we are doing to the planet. It is our home. You may believe you can escape in some rocket powered lifeboat but I know that in steerage class I am going down with the ship. That knowledge gives me the courage to speak up.
