(Go ahead and give the universe the finger!)
Does thinking that you are getting old upset you? Why are elderly
people reluctant to celebrate their birthdays? And why are birthday
parties usually set up for the so-called young people? I believe
it to be more logical the other way around—our elders deserve
birthday celebrations, not youths. Allow me to make my argument
before you quickly cast aside my brave notion.
We live in a universe ruled by its own unique laws. More to the
point, nothing within this universe can escape these laws. More
simply put, if you exist within this universe you have already
surrendered your existence to these laws. The second law of thermodynamics
is one of those universal ugly laws you may not like at all. As
you may know, this law is also named entropy or disorder. Entropy
is a universal state function. This law shows the direction of
spontaneous changes between a system and its surroundings. In scientific
terms, the direction of spontaneous change is always accompanied
by a dispersal of energy into a more disordered form, chaos.
Therefore, everything in our universe moves towards disorder and
chaos including all living organisms. This fact is why we die.
Evolution is the mastermind in cheating the universe with its second
law of thermodynamics. I do not know how, but somehow the blind
watchmaker came up with a way to organize some elements, such as
carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and a few more, in the form of organic
matter in order to give rise to living organisms with their individually
remarkable complexities.
The longest life span here on earth belongs to some individual
trees that are proven to have been around for a thousand years.
A few thousand years is just a few seconds in the cosmological
scale, in which the age of our universe has been estimated to be
around fifteen billion years. Although human beings can live for
several decades, if not a century, a hundred years is but a fraction
of a cosmological second. In other words, mankind can cheat the
universal entropy for just a blink of a cosmological eye.
Now think about it! Each year you live is like giving the finger
to our almighty universe with its inevitable law of entropy since
you’ve escaped this law once more. For that reason I believe
we should change our emphasis on the aging scale from earth years
to finger cycles (FC). For instance, if you are 20 years old you
have flipped the bird 20 times to entropy or you might say you
are 20 FCs. The clear winner is the individual who can give the
universe his or her middle finger the most number of times.
A birthday celebration is a symbol of evolution cheating the
universe. Therefore, birthday cakes should be decorated with stuck-up-finger-like
candles. So really . . . who better deserves a birthday celebration?
Is it really the young person who has lived, let’s say, 20
years? Is it not instead the older person who has escaped the second
law of thermodynamics for, let’s say, 90 years?
So go ahead and celebrate your birthday if you are older than
I am because you deserve it more than I do. But, you ask, how many
middle fingers have I raised to the universe so far? Guess!
