4 | Each clue leads to 2 words. What's the connection between those words?I. An idea may be beyond this, but it still holds water.

The two words in each case are homophones. I. Pale and pail |
The answer is Java. explanation: A treasure of red corundum and oyster-bounty is RUBY and 'Pearl' or PERL. A certain Mr. Curry would be the mathematician Haskell Curry whose work contributed to the foundations of functional computer languages(fcl). A large snake with a speech impediment would be a PYTHON with a LISP. You found it on the island of JAVA. The link is that these (the capitalized worlds) are all somehow related to functional computer languages. (as well as the language CURRY, in fact.) LISP is essentially a fcl and PERL, PYTHON, & RUBY can be used in a functional style. The way in which JAVA is related is that a variant of PYTHON is JYTHON which compiles to JAVA bitcode. niobium |

The answer is 1547. The nth term in the sequence is the total number of genes in human chromosome number n. You can verify this at www.genecards.org
Specifically for chromosome

I prefer repository, from the Latin repositorium
Rennin (or rennet) as the enzyme that turns milk into cheese, as in Monty python's Life of Brian, Blessed are the cheesemakers.
"What was that?----Gregory (Terence Bayler)
"I don't know. I was too busy talking to Bignose."----Cheeky
(Eric Idle)
"I think it was 'Blessed are the cheesemakers.'"----crowd
member
"Ah, what's so special about the cheesemakers?"----Mrs.
Gregory (Carol Cleveland)
"Well, obviously, it's not meant to be taken literally. It
refers to any manufacturers of dairy products."----Gregory
Of course I expected you to think of Brian Blessed, because I'm a sadist.

All refer to defensive military technology.
The question refers to military terminology for defence and countermeasures. The four things are: Splinter. Splinter camouflage was used for German uniforms in World War II to make sure the soldiers stayed hidden from sight. A fox. A defensive fighting position (DFP) is more commonly known as a foxhole and could be used to hide a soldier from enemy fire while maintaining the opportunity to fire himself. A window. A countermeasure to Radar detection is known as
chaff, small bits of metal scattered in the air that produce
millions of tiny blips on the Radar. In World War II, the
British referred to chaff as Flares. Flares are a type of pyrotechnic that provide illumination
without an explosion. However, there is a kind of flare that
produces mostly heat and can be used as a countermeasure to

WINDOW was foil strips cut to exactly one half of the wavelength of the German radar, which produced the maximum possible radar return from the smallest possible amount of material. Huge clouds of WINDOW were used for the night raids on Hamburg making the German radar useless.
Fox was the weakest one of the bunch. awaldock suggested The Fox Reconnaissance Vehicle detects the possible presence of liquid chemical warfare agents and thus protects the lives of soldiers on the battlefield. Which is reasonable.
I had in mind the Foxer noisemaker which was extremely effective in countering German acoustically targeted long range torpedoes either by luring them to a more attractive but expendable target or by convincing the U Boat captain of the futility of such an attack.

Flares are widely used as active countermeasures against heat seeking missiles, especially by slow and low flying large aircraft which are very vulnerable to attack by cheap shoulder-launched ground to air missiles.
Splinter is a character from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
A really tough bunch of questions has reduced the entries and the scores this week.
Three players have fallen foul of the rule that if nobody else gets the right answer for your question neither do you.
