(The butterflies are not a clue, quite the contrary, their job is covering up some of the more obvious clues.)

I am an optician. The powers of lenses are calculated in diptres (reciprocal of metre) and we work in 1/4 (0.25) dioptre (D) steps.

My question is this.

You have 4 sets of lenses on “twirly” sticks so that each stick has + and - a given lens value (i.e. +/- 0.25D - both lenses must have the same numerical value, but opposite signs). What I want to know is what are the values of the lenses that we need in order for these 4 sticks to be used together to give all powers required up to +/- 10.00D. Remember the “twirly” nature of the stick means that you can't use both the + and - lenses of the same twirler to make a value (although why would you?). You do not need to use all of the sticks to make a value, combinations of 0-4 of the sticks will suffice (0 for the 0.00D power).
This is how lens value could be checked in the old days.

In my trusty old dictionary between a well regarded warlord and a scar I find a fantastic creature or a bogey, a Cockney's friend, Indian cloth, CHCl3, a parking brake for an aeroplane, non-Trinitarian like James, the last place many people want to be put and an ill-bred fellow.
Can you find any guerrillas here?
