    The Great American Blow Job

Antony Flew was a major figure in UK academic philosophy for decades. In addition to his erstwhile atheism, he was also known as an advocate of neoliberalism in matters economic. I am an American Baby Boomer and can assure you that hetero anal intercourse is not routine among white mainstream USA. It has the reputation of being a black male thing; they call it "cornholing." The boys I grew up with joked about cocksucking all the time, but much less about buttfucking. Deep down, anal struck us as unsanitary and as evidence that one was not fully heterosexual. I was very surprised to learn from a university friend that he enjoyed anal with a condom. On the other hand, the blow job is deeply American. Why? It is seen as cheap and simple safe sex. (It's not quite disease free.) It services the male while not putting virginity at risk. The blow job is very often depicted in porn videos, because it is easy to film I say, and because the dude seldom shows his face. Blow jobs are easy to do in parked cars on hot summer nights. No incriminating semen scattered about; just take it in the mouth and either swallow, or spit out discretely. I believe that the foreskin or its absence importantly conditions preferred sexual practices, and never forget that most adult Americans are circumcised. Handjobs are quite easy on intact men. Performing a handjob on a circumcised man can require patience, skill, and KY jelly. On the other hand, circumcision makes less disgusting blowing an organ that has not been freshly washed. No need to interrupt growing passion with a trip to the bathroom sink. A deep horror of going down on an uncircumcised organ, perceived as slimy and smelly, is perhaps the most common reason why millions of American mothers still prefer to circumcise their baby boys. You are wholly correct to prefer Rubensian women. Nature knows what she is doing. I much much prefer a size 20 warm, passionate, caring and intelligent woman, to a size 12 who was a cold, selfish, calculating airhead, who expected me to give her regular orgasms but who took little interest in my body. Fat plain women who are sexually voracious and chatty in bed are infinitely preferable to cold women who look like Kate Moss. Rumour had it when I was young that the blow job began with prostitutes. It was alleged that many well-off married men were occasional clients of prostitutes, simply because their wives would not go down. Thanks to porn, the American blow job has spread around the world.

Perhaps it was Antony Flew's right wing thinking that contributed to my ignorance of him. It was not just classical liberalism he seems to have been allied to some rather unsavoury characters on the far right. It seems atheism can easily lead to a nasty kind of unashamedly elitist and even racist Social Darwinism in some people.

It is very easy to make the mistake of seeing evolution as somehow being a good thing because it was a vital part in our existence. Simply being an atheist doesn't mean I think like that. The life I am leading depended on many things happening just as they did but it is madness to conclude that every necessary step was A Good Thing simply because it was a necessary step, still more ridiculous is to suggest that the future needs more of whatever it was that brought me about e.g. another couple of mass extinction crises, a Norman invasion, an industrial revolution and rail transportation of school children to single sex schools (because that is how my parents met). Evolution is not A Good Thing. If there is further evolution it means there will be struggle and death unless by some unexpected miracle there is an increase in the size of the habitable environment. In my book struggle and death are not Good Things and so evolution is best seen as something in the past, something cold and hard, not a warm fluffy aspiration for the future. It certainly is not our destiny, our duty, our master or something we should seek to serve.

The Great American Blow-Job

Fellatio is not an American invention, it is fairly common behaviour in many parts of the world and at many different times. It has been suggested many times that the wearing of lipstick began as a sign that a prostitute would engage in fellatio. However I think you have a point about the the centrality of the blow-job in American culture.

I think this is a post-war phenomenon. The contributory factors are:

Cars

Virginity complex

Lack of private space

Alcohol laws

Circumcision

It should be readily accepted that it is perfectly normal for people in their late teens to be interested in having sex. The extent to which they actually manage it does vary from time to time and place to place. If you wanted to maximize the chances of young people having sex you should give them their own room in a building without resident adults or a curfew, access to cheap alcohol, plus an allowance and a car. Despite all those advantages I didn't score very well while I was at university.

American teen culture is epitomized by free and easy access to cars, limited access to alcohol and little or no opportunities to make out properly in a bed. Sex tends to be something done in a parked car. While full penetration is possible in a car, even a small car. There have been numerous claims of people being able to have sex in a Mini (a proper one, not those overgrown BMW things) and I have met the result of a liaison in a stolen Morris Minor Traveller. However it is not easy or dignified even if you have done some (hopefully) dry runs playing Twister. Having full sex in a car is simply unavoidably ungainly, unromantic and shabby. No nice girl would ever want her cherry popped in a Datsun Cherry (so I drove her home, my mother was out at work).

In contrast giving a blow job is something a young lady can do in a car while still appearing demure and feminine. She doesn't need her ankles in a cup holder. She can even make out that she is chaste, after all it is not just Bill Clinton that regards giving head as being something a little bit less than having sexual relations.

In Britain the blow job in a car is much less common and I think that circumcision is a factor here. Masturbating an intact penis is easy and doesn't require any lubrication, it also doesn't involve ducking down out of sight. Come to that it doesn't even require stopping the car.

A circumcised penis is an external organ, so sucking one is rather like sucking an elbow or a thumb, albeit one which has been in a man's pants for a few hours, so perhaps more like sucking a big toe. The head of an intact penis is more like a clitoris, much more of an internal organ. It's moist, as it should be. Of course many women are more than happy to suck an uncircumcised penis just as many men are happy to stick their faces into a woman's vulval cleft without any thought to hygienic precautions. But, well, yes, many aren't so keen and why the hell should they feel embarrassed for having standards? There is no connection between depth of love and a desire to drink urine or eat smegma. Mutual masturbation is an excellent substitute for full intercourse if you are looking for a substitute, as many generations can testify to.

Men do have a point when they complain that giving head to a woman is harder than giving it to a man especially in a confined space, but they use this as a reason not to reciprocate rather than a reason to go out with men instead. Of course the other factor involved in not giving head to a woman is the simply ickiness factor. The contents of the vulval cleft are all internal organs and all to some degree marinated in moisture, some of which is urine. The distaste is very similar to that women sometimes show for sucking an intact penis. I can hardly see that wanting her son to have no problems with getting blown while having sex without her approval is really a good reason for any woman to butcher her son's genitals depriving him of the true sensations of sex. If she really wants her son to have natural and spontaneous under-age sex she can give him the house keys and give him some privacy, that is far more civilized behaviour than putting him down for cosmetic surgery on his genitals without his permission.

To most people in the civilized world oral sex is foreplay rather than a replacement for regular sex so the question of spit or swallow never arises: spit or swallow what?
